Meditation: A Simple Guide

Guest Written by Sarah Frick
While the exact origins of meditation are unknown, many believe it’s been around for over 5,000 years. Meditation is the act of focusing or thinking deeply for a period of time. Some people meditate in silence and others speak or chant. Over all, as long as meditation encompasses focusing or thinking deeply, there is really no wrong way to do it. Many people like to set the mood with a quiet setting. The effect meditation can have on people varies depending on the person or type of meditation. However, some of the most common uses for meditation are to ease stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness.

Stress plagues many Americans, and meditation is one of the healthiest ways for people to relieve stress. Stress is emotional or mental strain that can be caused by work, relationships, school, and so many other things. Specifically, work stress can be brutal. My friend, Bob, is a lawyer and works for a foreclosure law firm. The firm is not doing well because the housing market is back up. The firm has laid off many people, and as a result, Bob has to do the work of three attorneys. Regardless of the extra work, the firm still expects the work to be completed in a timely fashion. This has caused Bob’s stress levels to rise. Choosing a type of meditation called Mantra Meditation is a way that he relieves his stress. Mantra Meditation is when you silently repeat calming words, thoughts, or phrases to prevent distracting thoughts. Bob can take five minutes at his desk to help reduce stress to deal with a difficult situation.
Relieving stress isn’t the only positive effect meditation can have for people; meditation can also reduce anxiety. Anxiety refers to extreme fear or worry and is a medical illness that plagues millions of American. Anxiety is a general term that includes but is not limited to anxiety attacks, panic attacks, phobias, and social anxiety. I should give a disclaimer that I am not in any way implying that meditation can replaced the need for medication to treat anxiety. Anxiety is an illness, and if someone is suffering from anxiety, they should be seen by a medical professional. However, meditation can relieve some the symptoms of anxiety. One type of meditation that helps people with anxiety is called Zen Meditation. This type of meditation is done when a person sits or kneels in a Buddha-like position and they breathe smoothly, which slows down the mind and helps encourage good feelings. With anxiety being such a common problem in America today, knowing ways to relieve anxiety is vital.

One of the effects of stress and anxiety is sleeplessness. So many people lie in bed watching the clock tic, but when they close their eyes their mind runs wild. Not getting proper sleep for one night can cause lethargy for a full week. It is vital that everyone gets at least 5 hours of sleep per night. However, whether they’re thinking about work, family, friends, or one of the many ways people over extend themselves, many find themselves turning to over the counter sleep aids. Thankfully, it not necessarily needed. Before grabbing the bottle, it might be worth trying mediation. The type of meditation that can be very helpful for sleeplessness is guided imagery. Guided Imagery is a type of meditation where a guide leads through a series of visualizations. According to urbanwired.com, “It is essentially induced dreaming or daydreaming and it enables the subconscious to express itself while one is actually awake. The practitioner imagines a soothing environment, to help him/her relax, and may project elements causing pain, stress and anger in his/her real life on to the environment. In order to resolve issues in a safe, non-conflictual zone, guided imagery is ideal. One can practice this without a guide once one gets accustomed.” Many people I know have found this method essential to falling asleep at night.

The practice of meditation has been used for centuries. As a kid, I remember my dad using meditation to help my brothers and I feel asleep many times. I have only touched on a few types of meditation. With a quick google search, many different ways that meditation can be done and how it can improve quality of life can be found. Also, applications on phones and tablets can be tremendously helpful. They often feature guides and information that can get you started with ease. Many of these applications are free.

Golf Courses: 5 of Michigan’s Best Courses

I love golfing. It is challenging, frustrating, and rarely rewarding. Some of my best memories are playing atrocious golf with awesome friends. Below are 5 of Michigan’s best golf courses that are not outrageously priced.

Apple Mountain Golf Course

Located near Saginaw, it is reasonably priced and beautiful to look at. Due to it being a ski resort in the winter, it has amazing elevation changes and eye popping views, you will be thoroughly challenged.

Fall Rate is only $42

Boulder Pointe

I just recently played this course. It’s in extremely good condition, it has beautiful views, and it is not crazy difficult. It is not overly long, and has large fairways and greens. The biggest challenge is, depending on the side you play, is the amount of water on the course. If you aren’t hitting your irons precise, be prepared to lose plenty of balls.

Current Rate $40 – But it’s consistently on Golfnow with HotDeals

Lyon Oaks

The layout is fantastic. It feels like a course you find up north but it’s located in Lyon twp. You always see amazing wildlife and amazing views. The course is pretty challenging but well worth checking out.

Summer Rate after 1pm is $52

Northville Hills Golf Course

Okay, I know I’ve said great layout already, but this course in my mind is laid out perfectly. It has many two fairway holes and many strategically placed bunkers. It’s Arnold Palmer signature course and you can definitely tell why.

Summer Rate is $47 before noon on the weekdays

Eagle Crest Resort

This is Eastern Michigan’s Home course and they are lucky to enjoy it. The views from the clubhouse are absolutely stunning. The course is quite challenging with narrow fairways and plenty of water. The truth is, it doesn’t matter how you are playing, just relax and enjoy the views.

$65 on the weekend

Okay, that’s my list of 5 stunning golf courses in Michigan. There are obviously many more but these are the ones I have recently enjoyed. If you have any ideas for golf courses I should check out, add them in the comment section.

Psoriasis Treatment: How I removed my Psoriasis in 60 days

I was 15 years old and to my horror I woke up one morning with red flaky patches on my elbows. At the time, I was mortified. I quickly put on my Doctors hat and scoured the internet to self diagnose myself. The photos that popped up on the internet were terrifying. Photo after photo of amazing people that have been stricken with this horrible disease. I went to the doctors and they diagnosed me with psoriasis. And of course they prescribed me with a psoriasis treatment: oral steroids and steroid creams.

I used their prescribed psoriasis treatment for the next 15 years. It worked, a little, but in my early 30’s my psoriasis started getting worse. It spread to my knees, arms, shins, and scalp. Needless to say, I was stressed out. At that point, I decided I needed to take my psoriasis treatment more serious. I searched psoriasis forums for hours on end looking for a secret weapon to blast away my psoriasis. Now I didn’t find a secret weapon but what I did find, through reading 1000’s of posts, was a common thread for treating psoriasis. Below is what I did to get rid of my psoriasis in 60 days.

I 100% treated my psoriasis through my diet. I ate an extremely strict diet that consisted of the following:

  • Lots of water
  • Daily juicing
  • Fish
  • Broccoli
  • Brown rice

I ate the above everyday for my psoriasis treatment. This was EXTREMELY difficult. Especially for me, whose daily nutrition consisted of fast food and beer. The most challenging part was, I had no idea if it was going to work, but I had faith. In all of my reading, there seemed to be a consistent theme of people healing their psoriasis through healthy eating in 60 days. After 59 days I saw 0 results. It was more than a little demoralizing. But on the 60th day I woke up and 90% of my psoriasis was completely gone. I know it sounds crazy but it’s true. I didn’t see any incremental improvements. It all virtually vanished overnight.

Fast forward 5 years to today, and of course most of my psoriasis is back. I like to eat and drink too much to partake in this regimen permanently, but it is nice to know that I can manage my psoriasis through a healthy diet. In addition, with more reading and research, I have found many articles that reference a possible link to inflammation and psoriasis. With the leading causes for inflammation being leaky gut or candida.

I hope this article can help anyone that is struggling with psoriasis. I can’t promise that everyone will have the same results as I did, with the outlined psoriasis treatment, but I believe eating a healthy diet can go a long ways in fighting this manageable disease.

Everyone hates public speaking. It is the number one fear for the average person. But who wants to be average!?!? These 4 tips will gurantee you kill your next speech.

Tip 1 – Preparation

Seriously, you have to be prepared. Ensure you know your subject matter upside down and backwards.

Tip 2 – Practice

Do a few dry runs with someone you can trust to give you honest feedback. A little practice will go a long ways.

Tip 3 – Perspective

I know it’s very easy to convince yourself that any mistake will be the end of the world but the better thought process is to think of the worse thing that could happen. I think you’ll quickly realize that at the end of the day, the worse scenario isn’t that bad. It could even turn into your favorite story.

Tip 4 – Patience

Okay, everyone gets nervous when public speaking. If you didn’t get nervous, it means you don’t care. But if you are patient with yourself and show yourself empathy you will find you will feel more comfortable each time you do it.

Craft Beers: The Top 5 List of Craft Beers Brewed in Michigan

Below are the top 5 beers made in Michigan. You can disagree with the list but you would be wrong. And if you feel strongly enough about a different beer, post your thoughts in the comments section and I will dismantle you with straight FACTS.

1) No Rules – Perrin Brewery

Number 1 on the list of craft beers is a vietnamese porter aged in bourbon barrels – whatever that means. It’s sweet, delicious, and STRONG. Drink one bomber and you will be on the floor.

2) M43 – Old Nation

This is a NE style ipa. If you don’t know what that means, stop reading this list. It’s juicy, hoppy, and cloudy. Just how I like it.

3) Flying Buffalo – Griffin Claw

This is a bourbon barrel stout. It has an amazing mouthfeel, with chocolate notes upfront, and finishes with a sweet bourbon taste.

4) The Juice is Loose – Transient Artisan Ales

Another NE style ipa. The east coast style ipa’s are where it’s at. The old school IPAs that are crystal clear are out and for a good reason. They taste boring.

5) Black Note Stout – Bell’s Brewery

This beer barely made the list. It tastes great but so do many bourbon style stouts but I thought at least one beer from the most infamous brewery in michigan should make the list.

Above is hands down the most killer list of craft beers brewed in Michigan. Drink them or die.

Morning Routine Checklist: 7 killer activities to start your day

Okay, so I am about to share with you life’s biggest secret. I would suggest you put down your remote and stand up because otherwise you may literally explode. That’s how amazing this secret is. Now that I have officially set your expectations so ridiculously high that this article will never be able to live up to the hype, I will get this party started right – quickly!

The first hour and the last hour are the 2 most important hours of the day. They must be carefully planned and artfully implemented. Routines are critical to ensure you have an awesome day and a restful sleep. In this article I’m going to focus on a morning routine checklist you must follow every day to ensure you are your most amazing, productive, self.

Step 1 – Be Grateful

Wake up every morning with some zest for life. LITERALLY! The first thing you should do every morning is say thank you for being alive! Being a little grateful first thing in the morning will start your day with a little pep. Oprah does it.

Step 2 – Drink Water

This is one of the most important steps in your morning routine checklist. When you wake up you are massively dehydrated. Drink a 12 oz glass of water to kick start your metabolism.

Step 3 – Shower

You need to clean yourself up and ensure you are feeling dapper for the day. As the old saying goes, look good – FEEL good.

Step 4 – Meditate

Imagine your mind is a battery and everyday, like your phone, you are replaying old videos of your life, planning your day, or reading ridiculous blogs. Your brain/battery runs out of juice. Meditating for 5 minutes in the morning will recharge that tired old battery and get you ready for an awesome day.

Step 5 – Keep a Grateful Diary

Every morning I quickly jot down 3 things I’m grateful for. It’s quite simple, I open my notepad on my phone and type in 3 things I’m happy about. They don’t have to be overly complicated. I keep it simple, like, my family, my pets, and the sunny day. They don’t always have to be mind shattering ideas. Just something that cheers you up a little.

Step 6 – Drink a Green Smoothie

Everybody needs energy and I know most people use caffeine for a morning kick start. But a smoothie packed full of vitamins will give you more energy and keep your energy levels even through out the day.

Step 7 – A To-Do List

I don’t know about you but once my day starts to get going it can quickly get sidetracked by emails, meetings, and projects. In order to ensure you keep your day on track a to-do list is a must. Additionally, keeping lists, including priorities, is extremely taxing on your most vital resource, your brain. Lists take up a large amount of space in your prefrontal cortex that can be used for many other tasks. That’s why it is so critical to get that list out of your mind and on to a piece of paper.

I promise that if you follow the above morning routine checklist, you will have set the stage for a massively productive day.
